Purpose

It is our hope that in building an archive of deaths in custody, we become better able to develop a critical race and feminist analysis to sustain our political anti-violence projects.

This website contains case studies of Indigenous, Black and racialized peoples who have died in state custody in countries of the global North. From people shot by police, to those who die in immigration detention, all meet an untimely end, their deaths declared natural or justifiable. We analyze these deaths in custody to reveal their racial underpinnings.

We invite users to consider these deaths in custody as racial violence. This website, intended for activists, scholars, teachers and students, promotes a critical race analysis that informs, as it highlights, resistance.
